The Pittsburgh Steelers have a rising star in wide receiver George Pickens, but he made a crucial mistake ahead of Sunday’s game vs. the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The second-year pro had an interesting choice of words for the Jaguars’ defense, calling them a “hope” defense in the sense they just have a bunch of first-round guys on the DL, and they just “hope” they hold up long enough.
Needless to say, Jaguars’ defenders took notice of those comments and kept receipts.
They also got the last laugh over the Georgia product, holding him to one catch in five targets en route to a big win on the road.
That’s why, following the matchup, safeties Andrew Wignard and Rayshawn Jenkins made sure to let Pickens have it, mocking him for his comments and advising him never to put that kind of pressure on himself again (via Blitzburgh on Twitter).

They told him not to fire up a “bunch of hungry dogs” and to do better, stating that “if hoping is getting a dub, then they’ll take it.”
Pickens’ only catch was quite impressive, though, hurdling his way through two defenders for a 22-yard touchdown.
Even so, it was far from his usual production, as he was fresh off topping 100 yards in his past couple of games.
Pickens is a rising star in the league, and he’ll have more than enough opportunities to talk smack and stir the pot.
Still, he has to earn his stripes before making the kind of comments ahead of a game like this one.
